1. Name the note.

Listen to the following audio extract. You will hear a scale played up and down. There are eight notes – Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti and Do. You will learn to identify each note by sound. To start with we will learn to identify Do and Re (notes 1 and 2). Do is almost always the last note of a song and the note at which a melody can come to rest. You will learn to feel Do as a final note and Re as a note that needs to move to Do to complete a melody.

Here is a famous melody finishing on Do.

And here it is with the last note altered to finish on Re instead. Can you feel how the melody is now unfinished and needs to move down one note to Do to be complete?

In the following quiz you will hear three chords, followed by a note. Just say if you think the note is Do or Re.
